What To Do in Des Moines?

I am a Des Moines native. I grew up in Urbandale, went to Johnston, and now attend Drake University. Over the past couple of years living on and near campus, I have configured a list of my favorite things to do in Des Moines. Since it is currently summer, these will be catered to nice weather where the sun is shining. So here is a list of things to do, events you don’t want to miss, and favorite spots in the beautiful, perfect sized, ultra local city of Des Moines.

1. Downtown Farmer’s Market in Des Moines

Farmers Market

This is my favorite way to begin a Saturday in the summer. The Farmer’s Market occurs every Saturday from May 4th to October 26th. After going for so many years and having the same stands, I have a few spots that I will never miss. It is the perfect outing for people of any age to get some steps in, see cute dogs, buy local, and get pastries, snacks, produce, and trinkets from small businesses from all around the state. Hopefully, you can stop by at least one Saturday this summer at the Farmer’s Market.

2. Iowa State Fair in Des Moines

This extravagant event happens for ten days in August and is an event you want to attend. At the Iowa State Fair, there are various vendors and activities for everyone. From farm animals, concerts, fried food, competitions, and a giant slide, it’s the event of the summer. Luckily, it is ten days, so I can spread out what I like to see into several days so I can see animals, hopefully at a concert, then another eating and doing the activities at the various booths.

3. Noce Jazz Club in Des Moines

Noce Jazz Club

I was never in a Jazz band, or band for that matter, but my history in music and love for collective art has made me realize how much I appreciate how DSM has Noce Jazz Club. It is a must-see spot for anyone with a desire for live music. Paired with a small bar and snack, it is an excellent place for a date night or outing before or after dinner with friends. My friends and I have seen many shows there and love to see all the acts that come to Des Moines.

4. Gray’s Lake in Des Moines

Gray’s Lake is one of my favorite places to walk and get some steps in when it’s nice out. You can rent out canoes and paddle boards to spend the day on the water. It is common to have a picnic or lay out on the beach area. Some people even fish. It is an all-encompassing body of water in central Iowa where there is something for anyone. One lap is just under 2 miles to its perfect for a quick chat with a friend to catch up and be out in nature for exercise.

5. Iowa Cubs in Des Moines

The Iowa Cubs are the minor league team for the Chicago Cubs, and their games are such a fun atmosphere and a great way to spend an evening. The Iowa Cubs put on several deals or special event nights throughout their season that attract everyone to games. It is so fun to cheer on a local team and see them get picked up by the major league and reminisce on their time in Des Moines.
